Overview

The Graduate Program in Social Sciences at the State University of Rio de Janeiro has a Master’s and Doctoral program. The master’s course was created in 1994 and the doctorate in 1999, and has professor with PhDs degrees and excellent academic training and performance. For decades, the PPCIS – Uerj has been welcoming students from different backgrounds and from various regions of Brazil, and offers training that is geared towards an interdisciplinary perspective, articulating the three main areas of Social Sciences: Anthropology, Sociology and Political Science. This orientation runs through teaching, research and extension activities, aiming to encourage and promote the combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods.

The master course lasts 24 months and aims to offer a solid theoretical and methodological training. For this reason, its curriculum includes two theoretical disciplines (to be chosen from anthropological, sociological and political theories), one methodology discipline (to be chosen from quantitative or qualitative) and three elective disciplines, as well as the Qualification Defense and the Dissertation Defense, both defended before a panel of three professors. Those who pass receive the degree of Master in Social Sciences.

The PhD course lasts 48 months and aims to offer highly specialized training in research and academic production. To this end, its curriculum includes a theoretical discipline (to be chosen from anthropological, sociological, political and interdisciplinary theories), a methodology discipline (to be chosen from quantitative or qualitative), a Thesis Seminar and four elective discipline, as well as the Qualification Defense and the Thesis Defense, both defended before a panel of three and five professors, respectively. Those who pass receive the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences.

In addition to the disciplines, the PPCIS offers its students Academic Writing Workshops and the possibility of participating in research groups and projects based in the Program.
